Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat

pristine

wilderness

Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat is uniquely situated beside the World Heritage listed Wooroonooran National Park. As Rose Gums itself has 230 acres of private tropical forests, Rose Gums offers its guests an unforgettable bush experience. There is a unique mix of endangered wet sclerophyll and rainforest which makes for a large diversity in the plant & animal life.

  • Kilometres of walking tracks take guests to a pristine rainforest creek, a charming waterfall and giant trees such as rose gums. The tracks vary in grade from easy to average and in duration from 40 minutes to 90 minutes. See walking tracks:
  • 160 species of birds have been recorded. Your hosts Jon & Peta are keen naturalists and are more than happy to explain the uniqueness of this special place. Comprehensive environmental information is available in the treehouses. More bird watching information: Bird List & Specialty Birds
  • Platypus inhabit our large rainforest creeks and are often seen. This unique Australian animal lays eggs in burrows beside the creek and also feeds the babies milk. This very unusual animal is part of the family of monotremes, like the echidna. More info...
  • Even the occasional wild cassowary saunters through our forests. Cassowaries are only found in the rainforests of north Queensland and their conservation status is “endangered”. When rainforest fruits such as quandongs drop to the ground there are occasional sightings of cassowaries at Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat.
  • There is also other abundant wildlife species such butterflies & other unique insects, musky rat-kangaroos (Australia’s smallest kangaroo), large pythons and other snakes, turtles in the creek, even the occasional dingo howls in the distance.
