Environmental Care
Reforestation Efforts
Our commitment to reforestation is evident in the planting of over 30,000 trees since 1995. This initiative has transformed our landscape, fostering a rich habitat that now supports a diverse array of birdlife, including the majestic Southern Cassowaries. What was once dominated by weeds has blossomed into a flourishing forest. We continue our efforts with ongoing weed eradication programs and the thoughtful replanting of rainforest trees.
Nature Refuge
In 2007, Rose Gums was designated a Nature Refuge by the Queensland Government Environmental Protection Agency. This status ensures the protection of our vine forest and eucalypt woodland, serving as a sanctuary for endangered and rare species such as the Southern Cassowary, the vulnerable Macleay's Fig-parrot, the rare Grey Goshawk, the Blue-faced Parrot-finch, and the tapping green-eyed frog.
Buildings
At Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat, all buildings are constructed on previously degraded areas, seamlessly blending into the natural environment and strategically positioned to take advantage of the cooling breezes.
Water
At Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat, we prioritise environmental sustainability by sourcing our water from a natural underground spring 92 meters deep. This provides us with clean, sweet, and pure drinking water year-round, minimising our environmental impact.
Power
We use 240 volts single phase mains electricity to operate the lights and appliances to minimise energy consumption. Gas powers the instantaneous hot water services and cook tops, producing fewer emissions compared to traditional electric systems. For heating there is a slow combustion fireplace using local fallen timber with off-cuts from the local sawmills for kindling.
